It may be less appropriate as an adult to come into work dressed as a book character, but we’re still celebrating World Book Day by reflecting on a ‘pawsome’ creative collaboration.
This World Book Day, we’re proud that our work has been shared in a local school to encourage the children to love reading.
Last year, 44’s Amie and Jess were set the challenge of producing artwork for a children’s book written by local author Sylvia Newham.
The book followed the tale of a little girl called Poppy and her puppies Harley Farley and Brucie Lucy – two mischievous Tibetan Terriers. Based on Sylvia’s real granddaughter Poppy and two pets, the story was beautifully brought to life by our illustrations, completed pro bono through our 44 Community programme.
Bringing World Book Day to life
To celebrate World Book Week, ‘The Adventures of Harley Farley and Brucie Lucy’ was read to the whole of Poppy’s school. “It was lovely to present the story to Poppy’s classmates,” said Sylvia. “I wanted to encourage the children to enjoy reading and writing, so I explained a little bit about how the books came about and why I wanted to write them. The children asked a range of questions from how to get published through to who created the pictures.”
Sylvia also went a step further, setting the children a challenge of their very own – a creative writing competition with a book voucher prize for the overall winner from each year group. She also donated 20 copies of her own book to the school. They will sell them this Friday at a World Book Day sale to raise money for the school’s library.
“Without the help of 44 Communications, this project wouldn’t have taken off. They took my story and put it into a layout with beautiful pictures. I can’t think of another agency that would be able to help me the way they did. I wanted to give back something to the community and this was a perfect project for that to happen.”
“It was an honour for us to be a part of such a personal project bringing these characters to life,” said Jess and Amie. “The project was a joy to work on, and it’s great to see the work we put in inspiring the next generation of creative minds.”
