44 Team 2023

To mark Wellbeing Week, we’re sharing our best tips and tricks for looking after yourself and others…

Health and wellbeing affects us all and it’s something we can all be more mindful of. According to the CIPD, an ‘integrated approach to employee health and wellbeing can prompt higher levels of engagement and productivity’ and all any employee wants is a positive working environment, where everyone can be at their best. To get us thinking about this idea, we asked colleagues at 44 how they keep their wellbeing in check…

Account Director Sam Docking is grateful for her weekly pre-work walks with a good friend: “We go every week, come rain or shine! It’s a great way to talk through a problem, celebrate the good stuff and reminisce about the old days while getting some fresh air and exercise. It’s a win-win.”

44’s Partner Digital and Operations, Alan Coates, also appreciates an early start: “Getting up at 5am means I can have a couple of hours to myself to do what I need to do before the rest of the house wakes up – whether that’s getting on the exercise bike or winding up to the day with a cup of coffee and an episode of House of Cards.”

Account Director Jo Malby has one piece of advice on managing your wellbeing at work: “If you’re looking to work on your wellbeing, you’re already going in the right direction. You shouldn’t feel scared or embarrassed to talk to someone about how you’re feeling. You’ll definitely feel better if you do.”

In agreement about the importance of speaking up, Bryan Jones, Senior Editor, added: “Don’t ignore things if you start to feel overwhelmed. Modern life can be stressful. We’re lucky to work in such a supportive environment where it’s easy to talk to colleagues if you’re feeling the pressure, and share the load when things get tough.”

Tom Abbott, 44’s Managing Partner, talks about how he maintains that tricky ‘work-life’ balance.

“It’s about recognising that you will have days that feel hard and frustrating, so it’s important to step back and understand why everything matters, what you’re invested in and how you feel about it.”

Tom’s top tip? “Write down your successes, big or small, and read them for encouragement on the harder days.”

A similar tidbit of advice comes from Senior Project Manager Rob Jones, who recommends creating a ‘Positivity’ folder to save any standout emails in. Looking through these positive messages can provide a little boost when in need of any motivation or encouragement.

Accounts Manager Hannah Moss and Editor Hannah Montgomery both reinforce the value in taking some ‘me-time’. Hannah Moss suggests a spa day with friends to wind down, while Hannah Montgomery has discovered a new love for meditation: “Listening to a 10-minute YouTube video helps me drift off. You can also set a ‘sleep timer’ on Spotify which allows you to listen to a calming playlist without having to worry about manually turning off the app or wearing down your battery.”

Jess Grove, Senior Designer, relaxes by baking and cooking meals for her family to enjoy: “We juggle so much in life; work, family, friends, diet, exercise, life admin, cleaning, the list goes on… but it really is so important to remember that you matter. Time is a blessing and we only get one life. It’s yours to live, so remember to enjoy it.”

Jonny Hooke, Digital Project Manager, and Jo Williams, Senior Comms Specialist, are both big fans of nature and the great outdoors. Jonny is looking forward to his next trip up Mam Tor: “It’s not a particularly difficult or challenging walk, but I already know that the scenery will be amazing and ultimately, I’ll feel so much better for it. I can’t wait!”

Jo is looking forward to having some time to herself in her garden while being in the moment: “I consciously try to be present instead of thinking of the next activity, job or item on the to-do list.”

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day, but it’s important we take the time to consider our wellbeing, too. If you’re looking to engage colleagues in this area, we can support you. Get in touch today to find out how we can help.
