Accountants tend to be (unfairly) stereotyped as a little bit dull and boring. Here at 44, we have Hannah Moss − possibly the only accounts manager in the world to have a zoo in her back garden…
Hi Hannah. Tell us how long you’ve been with 44 and what your role is.
I’ve been with 44 since January, working as the agency’s accounts manager, supporting the day-to-day operation of the commercial 44 business. Before that, I worked for a chartered accountants and later in management accounts. Most recently I managed the accounts at a residential care home.
My role at 44 broadly covers business administration and accounts.
What’s fun about the job – and what’s the biggest challenge?
I am fortunate to work with a really happy, fun and friendly team. Everyone has been so welcoming since I started, and it’s the people here that make this such an enjoyable place to work.
I also enjoy collaborating with a wide range of people connected with the business – from our external accountant, creative partners, like freelance designers and writers, to our fabulous account managers and project leads. Everyone is so passionate about what they do, so it’s easy to draw on all that positive energy.
And as for challenges − trying not to eat too many of Amy’s home-baked treats!
What do you get up to in your spare time?
I can pretty confidently say that I am the only accounts manager in the world who has a small domestic zoo in her back garden.
My menagerie consists of one feisty but loveable Schnauzer; one bearded dragon (a medium-sized lizard with impressive spikes around its neck); one western hognose snake; one beautiful blue and gold macaw; two rabbits; and an aviary full of a fabulous flock of more than 60 birds, including budgies, finches, cockatiels and quails.
I know, it sounds a bit weird, but I love animals. My partner Chris and I took up budgie breeding in lockdown. There are so many colours and mutations. It is great fun.
But by far my most favourite way to spend my time is with my children, Seth and Elena. They are my greatest achievements in life, and we have a lot of fun together. I am a big child at heart, and we love our living room discos, Nerf Gun wars, and, of course, animal documentaries!
Describe yourself in three words…
Friendly, talkative and clumsy – I’m just recovering from falling over and spraining my ankle while training for the 10K Two Castles run.
And, finally, which three people − real or imagined, alive or from the past − would you invite to join you for a drink and a bite to eat at your favourite haunt?
Can I do separate things with my three new friends? Think I’d like to spread them out over a day.
So, I’d have breakfast with Roald Dahl, my favourite author when I was a child. I loved The BFG and we could share a delicious bottle of frobscottle.
Bottomless brunch with the amazing Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Fleabag is one of my favourite television series, and she was also the head writer and producer for Killing Eve, which I loved.
Dinner would be with Uhtred, son of Uhtred. I’ve been watching a series on the TV called The Last Kingdom, set in the year 886. We could ride horseback to Bebbanburg and roast some meat over a fire.
The perfect day!
