44 Team 2023

Meet Ellyn Carty-Jones, an A Level student, who recently spent a week with us doing work experience. She shares what she got up to and learned throughout her time here at 44…

What are you currently studying and what are your academic hopes for the future?
I am currently at sixth form studying my A Levels. I am taking business, psychology and geography – so very essay-based subjects. After completing them, I would really like to continue studying by going to university or starting an apprenticeship. Long term, I hope I can pursue a career in marketing!

Tell us a bit about what you’ve been up to during your work experience this week.
Wow, what a week – it has been fascinating! The team at 44 have looked after me so well and provided me with so many learning opportunities like I’ve never had before. From being involved in team meetings, writing an article to be published, creating social media posts, proofing a publication called Taste, briefing the design team, and joining client calls (with Volkswagen!) – I’ve pretty much done it all!

I even created and delivered a presentation to the team about how AI affects e-commerce, which was really interesting to research throughout the week and was great to be able to present to everyone.

What have you learnt this week?
I must say, I really have learnt the value and importance of internal communication in every business – it’s vital. I think a good communication system where everyone feels valued, heard and empowered at work is key to ensure high job satisfaction. It also motivates employees to perform their job to the best of their ability. After all, happy employees sell your company and have a real positive effect on your reputation.

What have you enjoyed most about this week?
I’ve genuinely enjoyed everything I have done this week. 44 has given me a real inside look into how an employee engagement agency runs day-to-day, interacts with clients and works on their projects. I have even learnt what an “intranet” is!

The environment I have been able to learn in this week has been fabulous and that’s what has really made it so enjoyable. Everyone has been so welcoming and all follow the team values (Friendship, Awareness, Creativity, Excellence and Teamwork). Every employee truly believes in their importance, and I think that’s what makes 44 so successful.

Is there anything that you have found challenging?
I would say that this week has been my first exposure to a professional working environment and working 9am to 5pm. I must say it’s very full on and at the end of each day I have had no trouble falling asleep – that’s the biggest challenge!

How about your spare time – what do you enjoy doing and do you have any hobbies?
Well, when I am not studying or doing my homework, I am usually working as a waitress. I also do Irish dancing (and have been doing so since I was four!) so at least three nights a week I am at dance class. When I can be bothered, I do try to go to the gym (although that’s a rare occurrence!). And finally, I love to socialise with my family and friends.

If your family had to describe you in three words, what would they be?
After asking at the dinner table, my family managed to come up with four (I hope that’s allowed!): conscientious, motivated, ambitious and messy!
