44’s new Editorial Assistant, Georgia Cooksey, talks about everything from rock and metal music, to Barcelona and the presentation of Thai food…

So tell us about yourself…

I graduated last year from the University of Birmingham with a 2:1 degree in Spanish. I decided to study this subject because I was fascinated by communication and how the use of language facilitates bridge-building between people. Learning about the culture, history, politics, poetry and art of Hispanic societies was something I was also really engaged with. Before joining 44, I worked at another agency which focused on B2B, external and stakeholder communications, so I have an insight into the PR and comms industry, but from the other side.

What’s your role at 44 Communications?

As an Editorial Assistant my role is really dynamic. I write copy, edit and proof-read content, and also assist with administration tasks and research, working on different projects for a variety of clients.

What are your first impressions of 44?

It’s a really refreshing workplace – I’ve been blown away by how caring, supportive and approachable the team is. Everyone is making a real effort to get to know me for who I am as a person, outside of the work I do, while giving me clear guidance on the tasks at hand so I’m not left to struggle in silence. You can tell everyone really cares about each other, their clients, and the work they do for them.

What do you hope to bring to 44?

I hope to bring a certain degree of quirkiness and creative flair, with fresh ideas and a smile!

What are your biggest strengths?

My biggest assets are probably my creativity and my ability to problem-solve.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

Music is my lifeline – I love to listen to rock, metal and punk music, and regularly go to live gigs. Oh and I also collect vinyl records! Outside of music, I like to write poetry, do yoga, go swimming, read, and spend time with friends.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Don’t worry about what you can’t change or control – it’s a waste of energy and time. Easier said than done, mind!

Quickfire:

Favourite band?

Sleep Token or Bring Me The Horizon. The versatility and genre-blending of both bands, the grittiness and the raw emotion behind the lyrics, and the stunning voices of the singers – it moves me every time.

Favourite book?

The Book Thief, I loved its takeaway message and how you can find solace in fictional worlds during tumultuous times, or the Handmaid’s Tale – which to some people is scarily plausible, but raises a lot of important debate and discussion on gender politics.

Favourite film?

I’m more of a series person as I struggle to sit still for over an hour – La Casa de Papel (Money Heist in English) is my favourite Netflix series. If I had to choose a film, it would probably be Pride and Prejudice, the Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen version, because of its messages on anti-prejudice, anti-snobbery and love.

Favourite food?

Anything Thai – I love the combination of unusual fragrant and spicy flavours, and it’s always presented so beautifully and colourfully!

Favourite destination?

Barcelona. I lived there for a few months as part of my year abroad and absolutely adored the dynamicity of this quirky city. The blend of the beach, the buzzing metropolis and the amazing architecture and history, along with the cool “hippie-ish” district of Gràcia, which has some really cool bars, squares and restaurants, just stole my heart completely!
