The town was made famous by the presence of its natural saline springs. In 1814 the Royal Pump Rooms and Baths were built to accommodate the fashion of ‘taking to the waters’ and the town was renamed to reflect its royal spa status. Bathing was seen as a worthwhile cure for numerous disorders. Times have moved on since then but the town has
