‘Engaging for Success’: the summary

The challenge: In 2008 the British Government commissioned two independent reviewers - David MacLeod and Nita Clarke - to investigate whether a wider take up of engagement approaches could impact positively on UK competitiveness and performance, and meet the challenges of increased global competition.
The evidence: Meetings were conducted with leaders, academics, employers and experts, as well as a wide range of public and private sector organisations which were used as case-studies and examples.
The conclusion: Put simply, there’s no doubt that engaging employees has a positive impact. The report lists many examples of companies and organisations where performance and profitability have been transformed by employee engagement, as well as many studies which show a clear correlation between engagement and performance.
The aftermath: Two years later, the report is still one of the most influential engagement studies. In 2010 the previous Government, taking into account the recommendations from the report, launched an online campaign asking employers what would help them better engage with their employees.
The problem: It’s 150 pages long! So, we have helpfully produced a summary in bitesize chunks, starting with the introduction (download below).
