'ENGAGING FOR SUCCESS': the summary
Chapter 1
"You sort of smell it, don’t you, that engagement of people as people. What goes on in meetings, how people talk to each other. You get the sense of energy, engagement, commitment, belief in what the organisation stands for.”
- Lord Currie, former Chair of the Office of Communications.
The above quote is taken from the first chapter of the 2009 MacLeod and Clarke report: ‘Engaging for Success.’ A few weeks ago we gave you a summary of the introduction - this week we’re focusing on chapter 1.
In this chapter MacLeod and Clarke concentrate on trying to pinpoint a definition of employee engagement:
“Does employee engagement need to be more clearly defined? Is it an attitude, a behaviour, an outcome, or all three?” (Macleod and Clarke, Engaging for Success, p.9)
Some of the outcomes of employee engagement are also identified. Did you know, for instance, that engaged employees in the UK take an average of 2.69 sick days per year, while the disengaged take an average of 6.19?
If that’s got you interested, read our chapter summary below to find out more:
